If I can see characters displayed on hyperterminal when connecting power to the megajolt , does this mean the cable is working correctly?

You doing it wrong
You are getting no response to 'c' or 's', you haven't tried 'C' or 'S', which you key in with SHIFT key on or CAPS LOCK on.
