EDIS coil question

Post by DannyP »

I measured my coil and get about .5 to .6 ohms across each primary. My question is shouldn't there be continuity between two of the outputs? That would make sense to me since two plugs fire at the same time, it is wasted spark ignition, right? There is continuity on my Suby coil, which works exactly like the Ford one, I think. The primary on the Sub is about .7 ohms, just in case you wanted to know, in a working car. The Ford parts are junkyard stuff, just checking things out as I start doing the install.

Also, what is the Escort firing order? I am installing in a VW type1 engine, which is 1-4-3-2. I do understand that I want 1 and 3 to fire at the same time, and ditto for 2 and 4. Is this what you call an even firing engine?

Hi Danny,

A typical coil pack will have about 0.5 - 0.7 ohms primary coil resistance and the secondary resistance is approximately 12K ohms. As a side note I've measured the "high performance" Accel EDIS replacement coil and it measured .1 ohm lower.. more current. :)

On an EDIS 4 cylinder coil pack you should measure the expected secondary resistance between outputs for cylinders 1 and 4 and 2 and 3.

Even fire order for a 4 cylinder is 1,3,4,2 where, in a wasted spark setup, plugs 1 & 4 fire together and plugs 2 & 3 fire together.

With your firing sequence it seems you will need to connect your 1 & 3 cylinders to the 1-4 output of the EDIS coil pack and the 4 & 2 cylinders to the 2-3 EDIS coil outputs.

1,4,3,2 <- yours
1,3,4,2 <- even fire

I thank you for the reply, and that is exactly what I thought about the firing order, that I would have to do a little swap and relabel the coil, no problem. Brent, what is the expected secondary resistance on the EDIS coil?

Glad to help. For the secondary resistance you should measure 12-14K Ohms. Measure this between the 1&4 / 2&3 outputs on the coil pack.
