Bosch Coil Pack

Hi Everyone,

I am in the process of collecting parts to carry out a Megajolt conversion on my Triumph GT6 this winter, I have searched previous threads on compatibility of alternative coil packs, and the general consencus seems to be that any coil pack with similar primary and secondary resistances will be suitable. As I do not know much about electronics my question is this. How close, numerically, do resistance values need to be to be considered similar?. Previous threads mention the Ford coil packs have a primary resistance of 0.5-0.7ohms, and a secondary resistance of 12-14Kohms. I have a new Bosch coil pack that I would like to use that has a primary resistance of 0.9ohms, and secondary resistance of 11.8Kohms. Are these resistance values similar enough to enable me to use the Bosch coil pack. I look forward to any replies.

Almost certainly no problem at all - you're slightly higher on the primary side which is better than being on the low side and the secondary side plays no material part in anything.

...just get it plugged in !

Hi Andy,

Your measurements on that coil pack suggest it will place less of a load on the EDIS module than the Ford coil packs will- and all other things equal, slightly less spark output. Likely nothing you would notice with a normal engine. So you should be fine!

The EDIS coil packs aren't the easiest things to physically mount- I'm sure there are some other units out there which may be more DIY friendly. Would you have a picture of the Bosch coil packs you're planning to use?

Yeah Brent, I am hacking up a Ford bracket and modding it so I can mount it up to my engine. It will end up very near the bellhousing. No problem with access, engine and trans are covered with a hinged clamshell. It is just the best location in order to not have to make longer plug wires

Hi,

Thank you for the replies, I suspected that the Bosch coil pack would be ok, I just wanted confirmation. From searching the net I found that the Bosch coil pack has an output voltage of approx 33KV as opposed to approx 40KV from the Ford coil. I figured that if it was adequate for a GM V6 then it would be fine for my mildly tuned Triumph engine. Attached is a picture of the coil pack, it looks like it should mount easily on any flat surface.
