Umm - you're right.
That would be pretty unlikely given a 1-2-4-3 firing order!
Blame the brain fade on playing with Datsuns for too long.
No further ideas come to mind.
Strange fault - backfires and odd timing light results.

Ah well - as suspected, the results with the timing light were a red herring!
I realised that I had another tool available to check the spark quality, a Gunson's ColourTune. I checked each of the cylinders in turn and saw a respectable spark in every one, at all rpm.
I have absolutely no idea why the light was misbehaving, but suspect that there may have been some interference or false triggering from other leads that messed up the signals.
Now I can go back to my original (fairly minor) problem - occasional backfires through the carb when starting from cold, and sometimes it runs on a bit when the ignition is turned off. It was my checking that the timing was correct that started all this nonsense! Saying that, I went out for a blast a little while ago, and all worked as it should...
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions though...

Glad to hear it. Do you have a separate power lead for the ignition? I would run a separate lead from the fusebox or the battery, and switch it with a relay. That should hopefully cure your run-on. You should probably do the same thing for the fuel pump, if you have an electric one. Can't help with the cold backfire problem, though.
