A few questions... please help!

Post by mr_bridger »

Just a couple of quick questions, as it was puzzling me the readings i was getting.

once the engine revs outside of the map (say 7000 rpm, on a map who's last bin column is 6000) does the advance go to zero, or will it stay at the advance that was in the last cell? as mine seems to go to zero.

Also, is there any way of adjusting the unit to subtract a couple of degrees from the readinds reported? I.E. , if the MJLJ says its putting out 15 degrees advance, but at the crank im only showing 10 (being the true reading) is this adjustable?, or do i have to rotate my trigger wheel on the crank until they match? i wonder as if my MJLJ is 5 degrees out from the crank, i can adjust my figures to sui the motor, but my map would be useless to someone elses whose is exact.

Many thanks,

Ross.

P.S. Anyone got a map for an overbored mini engine? (1380 with SW5)

Hi. if your advance is going to zero then i would think theres a problem. at most it should only drop to 10 degrees (std from the edis modual).
it could be your rev limiter kicking in, but again it should go to edis 10 degrees (but note the mjl will show 0 degrees).

the best method is to set your trigger wheel up correctly following the guide on this site. i think there is an offset function int he mjl software- but im not sure. you could just knock 5 degrees off all your advance bins and make a note that it has been done- and the reason why!

Hello Ross,

What is your rev limit set to in your map? The Rev Limit features a 'soft limit' where the advance goes to zero before the hard rev limit output is enabled. More info here:

As for zeroing out TDC: this needs to be mechanically set. It would be possible for the firmware to handle this, it has not been implemented yet.

Yes, it seems the revlimit had been set to like 5000rpm, thats now sorted, i was just worried that the MJLJ was saying zero (hadn't checked the actual advance on the engine at that point)

looked at the advance tho at idle, and it does seem to be reflecting what the configurator is saying, within a degree id say... will unplug the MJLJ and see what it is with just the EDIS as its hard to tell with only a few marks on the pulley (unit is set to 28 at idle, then drops to 14 above 1000rpm).

Cheers
Ross.
