Finally starting my install!

Post by DannyP »

Been doing a little work on the car. All electronics are done and tested, just have to change some engine seals and pushrod tubes, and build a loom.

I have been swamped with a large home improvement project, but that is at a standstill, so on to finish this. Spring is coming!

VERY nice :D

Just need to keep them that clean and shiny!

How did you get the degree markings around the Escort mounting pulley?

The alu pulley on the left is a 5" designed originally for use with a dry sump oil pump on a VW type1. It is used here to keep the speed down on a Porsche 911 fan assembly. Stock VW pulley is almost 7" in diameter. The trigger wheel used to be on a US Ford Escort, with a huge hole(2.5") lathe-drilled into the middle, the damper(rubber) and serpentine pulley removed, teeth cut down to about 1/4" thick, and appropriate steps cut to lay flat on my somewhat dished pulley. I got to do some of the machine work, and it is amazing how easily steel cuts. The cast iron center is much tougher on lathe bits. I also cut the teeth down a bit, and chamfered them. When I took the pulley off the junk car, I messed up the teeth a little. The gap is 1 mm, set with a feeler gauge. The two VR sensor holes were the scariest to cut as I only had one chance! The sensor is bolted through a 1/2" alu spacer into a large alu plate that the fan sits on, with 5mm X 0.80 pitch bolts(hex head now!) I used very low profile hex-head 10-32 bolts with loctite and serrated washers to grab the aluminum pulley, there is maybe 1/4" clearance on the backside. You can see the button-headed bolts in the last picture.

I would love to have a degree wheel on my new trigger wheel, found one at Gene Berg Enterprises, it's the 430B.

The TDC tooth is dead center in the VR sensor, so I can use that for testing, as every tooth is another ten degrees.
My pulley is about 3" off the firewall, so timing must be checked with a 45 degree mirror I rigged up, clamped to the end of the timing light, periscope style!

Engine is mid-mounted, facing forward, Megajolt won't be seen, except for coilpack. EDIS and Megajolt are going behind passenger seat, so I can reach my map switch.
