MJLJ + LPG

Post by repton »

Hi,

I'm fitting an MJLJ+EDIS8 system to a Rover V8 engine in a Land Rover with twin SU carbs that is running on LPG (a.k.a. autogas or propane). My LPG system has a connection to the -ve side of the coil at present. I'm told this is some kind of safety connection so the gas is cut off if the engine stops. Obviously if I don't have a coil any more, I don't have a -ve connection on the coil. Does anyone know if connecting this wire to the TACH output on the MJLJ will work or do I need to do something a bit more complicated?

TIA,
Paul

The module has switches build in wich you can program and therefor
switch the LPG relais.
You can set these at a certain rpm to allow the LPG.

As it is normally connected to the -ve side of the coil I suspect it's more than simply an on/off thing and I expect it's wanting some kind of pulsed signal so using one of the programmable outputs isn't likely to do the trick I wouldn't think.... unless anyone knows better?

Hi all,

There is an LPG safety device which looks for pulses from the coil, sounds like that is what you have.
Have a look at www.chrisperfect.com there are some DIY installation instructions which mention this.

How old is you V8 ? as far as I know everything post SD1 had electronic ignition in the dizzy.
If you don't have any points then it is electronic and the signal at your coil -Ve will be very similar to the coil drive signals from the EDIS.
So it should work fine from one of the coil drive outputs of the EDIS.
Even if you currently have points it will probably handle the higher coil drive output from the EDIS OK.

Remember you do stil have coil -Ve with the Edis, just there are more of them, they are the wires between the Edis and the coil.
