GTM Coupe - Mid Engined - A Series

Post by Ken555 »

Noticed that I had failed to add my car to the Gallery.

Lets start with the car:-
The Coupe is a mid-engined 2-seater sports car, with a Mini (A Series) engine.

Image

Engine spec is :-
MED engine, bored to 73.5mm with Omega pistons, 276 Kent cam, lightened flywheel, Stage 3 head with 36mm Inlet & 31mm Exhaust Valves. Weber DCOE 45 carburettor

Image

In September 2007 I decided to go Megajolt, to rid myself of having to change/adjust points, as this isn't too easy with the distributor up against the bulkhead.

I picked up an old Version 2 board

Image

And put it inside my own box, and flashed to, to cope with dual maps.

I then raided my local scrap yard for the parts needed

Image

An Escort giving up the ignition parts and a Sierra the triggerwheel.

I turned the mini crank pulley down, so the Sierra wheel would fit.

Image

The rest of the components were mounted on the rear framework

Image

With the pickup fitted on a homemade bracket.

Latest idea, modified rev-counter to hold the 5 stage shift light.

Hi, out of interest how do you drive your rev counter? What feed or method do you use? - I have just fitted my MegaJolt version 3 this weekend and managed to get the car running, also an A-Series engine, turbo charged. I am about to start wiring the dash this week which will include an older style rev counter.

I'm driving mine for the Ford EDIS "Clean Tach Out" on pin 11 (the green/red wire).

I looked for that today but the module I have has no wire for the tacho out! I will try the methods listed on the 'how to' pages, thanks

*if you want to use pin11, you need to disassemble the plug and put a pin/wire in that position.

*this will only work with an RVC type tachometer. the RVI types ie where the ignition current flows through the tachometer to the coil, just wont work with MJLJ/edis set up at all. you can see the type by looking at the lettering on the face of the tach.

I did wonder whether the edit module still had the output and just not the pin, so I might give that a go! The rev counter I have is a smiths one and very similar to Ken555's, will check the lettering tomorrow, thanks for your advice.

If you look at the bottom of the 2nd picture you will see the writing, normally covered with the bezel.

Right, checked this evening and I have two RVC type rev counters. After managing to add an additional socket into the edis module plug I tried both rev counters and neither worked. Now I don't really know 100% if either work, but I have access to a cheap electronic/digital rev counter and that showed a reading ok (so new module connection is fine).

Could you confirm the wiring on your rev counter? one of my units is almost identical to yours but both have the same connections, picture of the back perhaps?

Thanks.

On the back there are two connections, a "Lucar" space connection for the 12V. And a bullet connector for the Tach signal.

Case is earth.

mmm, think that is what I had but I will try again tomorrow evening if I get time, thanks for your help so far. If it doesn't work I might try taking a feed off of one of the coils just to prove the counters are faulty (I know the revs would read incorrectly on only one coil).

Today I re-tested both counters using the edis module pin 11 and still nothing so I connected them in turn to one side of the coil pack and both worked (reading 1/2 speed as expected). After reading the documentation on this site it suggested the PIP line could be used, I tried it and both counters worked ok. Not really sure why the EDIS module wouldn't drive them but at least I have a solution.
