ok to fire coil without plugs connected??

Post by Dimbit »

I'm about to complete the loom for my MJ and was wondering if it would do any damage if I were to connect it up and run the engine on the existing distributor set up, holding a spare plug connected to the EDIS against the block to check for spark. Would this damage the coil in any way? Is it ok for it to fire into nothing??

It's actually harder on the EDIS module than the coils- but it should be fine for a short while.

Should hopefully only be a few seconds. Is there a better way to check operation?
Thanks again

Never done it for an EDIS coil, but ran the existing dizzy/coil for many months in parallel with the MJLJ system on my rally car, with the existing coil "firing into nothing"...and it still worked OK when I needed to revert back (sold the car!)

Can't imagine the EDIS coil is any different...

If it works on cranking then it'll probably work when running, so you don't actually need to run on the existing setup - just go for it!
