No Spark at Edis installation Stage...?

Post by simon w »

Help! (first timer)
I am experiencing a lack of spark on my mjl installation. I have taken the advice of installing the edis first to ensure 10' limp mode is working etc, but it is giving me any spark whatever, have tripple checked wiring and supply voltages etc. Even tried different coil pack & vr sensor. The shielded cable to the vr sensor is origional with plug , so I havent tried swopping the wires over because there the same as off the donor car. I have noticed the Edis module gets from warm to hot depending on how long its connected?

Any ideas for me to try?

:?

Appreciated

Hello Simon,

The most common problem with no spark on EDIS is reversed VR sensor polarity, so I would still recommend trying that as it's a very quick test.

Very odd that your EDIS module would be getting that warm with no activity- The EDIS module should only be generating heat as it's driving the coils, while the engine is running. In addition to all the wiring checks, you may double check for the off-chance of reversed supply voltage on the EDIS module.

If you disconnect the coil pack do you still observe the module heating up?

P.S and FYI- I deleted the triple duplicate posts on the other thread- since you created a new one here.

Thanks...
by reversed 12 v supply do you mean wrong connection or possibly wired differently ?

Simon.

Both. It's an off chance you would have a problem here, but in any case it should be generally included in standard wiring checks, especially when the devices concerned are completely inoperative.

Hi there again,
found time to do a little checking...
as suggested double checked connections especially polarity / supplies , even went as far as the wiring diagram in the car manual for the donor. Everything checked out ok. I reversed the polarity on the VR sensor to no effect? checked distance to trigger wheel (approx 0.75 mm - on a 5" ring wheel / welded to pully - -obviously 36-1) I then disconnected the coil packs live supply and as you might have thought the Edis module did not over heat, checked connections to the coil pack (live in ctr, and other 2 wires correct to edis connection also) , ran a seperate live supply to coil and edis but still the same..? No spark.
are there different version of coil pack / wiring (this one came of an escort with 16v zetec..)....im thinking duff edis at the mo..
:?:

It Lives !

At last finally found time and replacement Edis to try & Bingo...sparks galore and engine running at 10' no problem...I have connected MJL but I cannot get any rpm readings on software, or any ignition advance at this stage. I have connected a volt meter and I am seeing a volatge going into the MJL. I cannot see any voltage coming out down the saw line? should I ? I have sheilding around pip/saw cable from Edis, properly earthed etc
Also my software / screen shows a reading of around 450 rpm as soon as I connect to the mjl when ignition is on ? and stays there regardless of engine rpm ?

Any Ideas?
:(

would be appreciated..

regards
Simon
