Post by KITT »

Hi folks,

Can anyone who's sucessfully used one of these to connect their laptop to their Megajolt please let me know what the make and model is? I have a friend who's got a newer laptop which doesn't have a COM port so needs one.

thanks

What port is your USB adapter on your laptop configured to? you would need to change it to that when running from your laptop.

Im running xp on my lap top, the mjl talks to pc running 98 through serial port fine, but cannot get the mjl to talk to lap top. Bought serial adapter (USB to serial made by KEYSPAN) "all" i have to do now is match the mjl port to the adapater port. Adapter running on COM7 but MJL only has options to run up to COM4. have posted comment to see if can change mjl to com7 and awaiting replies/help! as soon as i have success will let you know - how you getting on?

In windows, go to device mana

Post by brentp »

In windows, go to device manager, select the USB device- go to properties, and there you can re-configure it to be COM 1-4.

The software limits it to COM4- probably a subconscious limit on my part reflecting the old days where there were only 4 com ports available on a system... :(

belkin adaptor

Post by hotrodfil »

Hi Brent,
There seems to be two Serial adaptors from Belkin, one is a rounded off object around 4" x 3" x 1.5" (very roughly - I have one of their 4 port hubs in the same form factor but it's buried down the back of the desk!) whilst the other appears to be for communicating with PDA's, and is just a cable?
Anyone any success with the Keyspan ones, or the one from Maplins?
Also noted all around the net - always use the same USB port - USB is dynamic and will assign it a new number each time you plug it in!

USB Serial

Post by itguy »

Hi Matt

I use a USB serial adaptor with my vaio and windows xp.

Its a WASP one - take a look at http://www.waspbarcode.co.uk/barcode_accessories/

Think it was about 15 quid. Works a treat.

Will.

Wasp adaptor

Post by hotrodfil »

It's £50 on their site!
I've picked up an adaptor, however it's RS422, not RS232. Shouldn't be a problem if the signals are correct? Any ideas?

Serial to USB

Post by Snowfruit »

Would it be possible to attach a USB port to the MegaJolt board instead of the Serial port currently used? I suggest that this may be a logical upgrade as most poeple now use USB connectors for pretty much everything PC related...
