Do we have to use a vr sensor

Post by NITROPIXIE »

I've been thinking, yet again, is it a must that we have to use a vr sonsor and steel triggerwheel to supply crank information to the edis.

Would it be possible or has it been done where we use something like an opto sensor with a thin aluminum/plastic disc as a trigger wheel. This would make it alot lighter than some, easier to mount and possibly manufactuer. And if i'm right an opto sensor has a quicker response time, not that the vr sensor doesn't do its job well enough anyway.

I thought that this could open a gateway for yet more easy diy possibilities without the use of more expensive tooling??????

Any thoughts anyone????

Oops meant to post this in Q&A, anyone help??

I think I'm right in saying the EDIS requires the particular analogue signal style the VR sensor generates.
I like your idea though, and perhaps a furute EDIS-free development could include such an option?

well as long as the edis see's a negative ???? what you call it, trigger, at the correct magnitude then in theory it should work

brent has previously commented that he has either trigger edis with a square wave (ie the output of hall sensors) or posited that it would work. the important point is the the bottom half of the wave has a negative potential, as it is the swing from a +ve to a small -ve threshold which triggers the EDIS. vr sensors do that all by themselves; the on/off square wave output of a hall sensor, or other electronic switch, would need to be biased negative.

Optical sensors are best used in an environmentally controlled space where dirt and contaminants cannot obstruct the optics. That's primarily why VR sensors and hall effect sensors are ideal for things like crank, wheel-speed, driveshaft speed and crankshaft speed duties.

Car manufacturers do not use optical sensors because it's too dirty in an engine bay, which means optos are too unreliable. If the timing teeth are cut into the flywheel, then the weight penalty isn't significant either.
