Hi,

You definitely want to ensure the COM port settings in the software matches the USB settings. You can verify what COM port your USB adapter is on by going to Windows Device Manager.

Also see:

Are you testing your unit on the bench or is it wired into the car?

Thanks,

(PS- I removed your duplicate post in the other forum- apologies for any confusion)

Hello,

yes, the software should work fine with Vista.

USB to serial adapters are frequently problematic. Just for testing purposes, your best bet is to find a computer with a built-in serial port (like a desktop PC) and test with that. Power up the unit with a fresh 9V battery on the bench. Ensure the LED is shining when powered on. If you can communicate with the unit, then you would need to try a different USB-Serial adapter.

USB to serial adapters that have reported success are ones based on the FTDI chipset and the Prolific chipset.

Some additional questions:

You are using a V4 controller, correct?
Are you using a pre-made serial cable or a home built one?
Besides not communicating, does the unit actually control ignition timing using the default Ignition Map? (i.e. check that it's adjusting ignition timing with a timing light)

Hi,

With problems like this, it's always helpful to bench test it with a different computer for comparison, preferably one with a built-in serial port. If this is reasonably convenient to do, I would recommend trying this first.

There is an alternate troubleshooting technique using the Hyperterminal program for windows. See here:
http://www.autosportlabs.net/Troublesho ... lt_Lite_Jr.

With the V4 controller be sure to set the baud rate to 38400.

Failing that, I'm sure TriggerWheels would be happy to double-check the unit for you.

Please, let us know what you find out.

Hi Ian,

I assume you had the unit powered up correctly on the bench (verified power light) ?

If so, your testing appeared to be thorough, I would contact trigger wheels for evaluation and a possible replacement.

Please let us know what you find out.

the only outher thing i would like to ask you is that there loom plug that goes on ecu has rong coulered wires on them on won side of plug pins 1 to 8 are backwards so pin one is red 2 white 3 yello 4 black 5 brown 6 green 7 blue 8 white were as ther instructions state oposit to this 1 white 2blue 3green 4 brown 5black 6yello 7white 8 red 9 to 16 are correct to instructions so we asumed someone made a mistake and got them rong way round so we followd the numbers and egnored coulers when wireing up so could this be something to do with it alltho there has allways been a power light manythanks ian

Hi Ian,

The colors in the wiring diagram are incidental- they're just there to make it easier to read.
http://www.autosportlabs.net/MJLJ_V4_ve ... Jr._Wiring

What is important is that the correct signals are connected to the appropriate pins on the controller.

:D :D i think i might be getting somewere when wrighting that last post i thought i would check something i mentioned i followd pin numbers not coulers becase they were mixed up on loom so i checked it againsed the instructions on this forum and noticed that if i had followed the colers it would of mached your instructions and made us following pin numbers incorect we were feeding aux port as the 12v feed now following your instructions it is conecting on all compputers the instructions that i got are different to yours and more complicated . But next prob is it aint using live rpm or tps gauge on comp when car is running but its NOT displaying no port open or no cylinder count so whats the problem now lol anyone with any ideas
