just to update everyone who has been trying to help me it looks like the wiring fault with coulers and numbers explained in erlier post is wat the problem was your instruction on this site state to egnore coulers and follow numbers were as it looks like the instructions that came from triggerwheels follow coulers not numbers so because we followed numbers were the 2 references ere mixed up on my loom it was wired up incorectaly and now i have wired acording to this sites instructions it all seems to work so trigger wheels have made the whole prosess very dificalt with confusing and conflicting instructions i would like to thank all that have helped me and i am sure i be pivking your brains for somthing else soon kind rgards ian
Hi Ian. I'm glad you've got this sorted out now. As Brent says the wiring colours on the autosportlabs website are entirely arbitary. He has chosen a nice simple colour coding that makes sense on the website ie to use the same colour for groups of the wires that do the same thing. We (trigger-wheels.com) use a few more colours in the looms to make things a bit clearer which wire you're looking at when you've got the loom installed in the car. The instructions on the CD that you received with your system documents all the wiring and colours pretty clearly but if you can think of ways in which it could be improved then we'd love to hear them.
It's just a shame that the LED not lighting up didn't ring alarm bells as that could have saved a lot of time and was something that we mentioned in our email to you just 10 minutes after you first reported your problems! For reference although the office is closed for four days as far as order dispatch is concerned we will be endeavouring to answer queries so if you need assistance you can still email us at sales@trigger-wheels.com

hi trigger weels i am sorry that its not been a good experiance so far but i hope you will be able to see were i am coming from and maybe be able to alter things for futre buyers . i would say its not te fact that you have used coulers its the fact that the numbers that are molded onto the back of the plug do not tally up with your numbers and coulers on instructions this is what has thrown us out as for the power light being on if you follow the numbers stamped on the plug and not following coulers/numbers you end up feeding aux input wich dose light up the led it must back feed it , and this is why the problem was not noticed all along and making it difficalt to find so if you wont to no how to make it eiser to use i sugest you use a plug that is not numbered so that you would only be able to follow your numbers / coulersor or number the instructions to suit the plug because to avoid any confusion .
In past experiance most electrical conecters ect have numbers on them for reference and i would say some peaple would look at them not realising there not in same order as yours and thiking its right as i have done .
i apolagise for ranting on forum but i am sure you can apreciate i was a litle stressed after 4 days and 6 computers later lol .
i would also like to say problems aside now up and running it is a verry good product and your service has been great
many thanks ian

Ahh, that all makes sense and it sounds like something that it is useful to feed back to Brent as if it has bitten one person then I'm sure that it has bit others. It's a testament to the robustness of the megajolt that it copes with misconnection such as this but it may be that a simple tweak could be made in the next board respin could make this issue more obvious by stopping the back-feed then that would be great.indyian wrote:if you follow the numbers stamped on the plug and not following coulers/numbers you end up feeding aux input wich dose light up the led it must back feed it
I also see out what you mean by the pin numbering on the back of the molex and now that we know there is a potential gotcha there we'll see if we can do something about that.
Regards,
Chris

Help! I have the MJ wired up and the car runs fine on the default map. But I can't get past the 'runtime error - cylinder count' message. One question - the box is silver - does this mean I have a V3 instead of the V4 I thought I was getting? I purchased the unit new from you last year (2008). I have gone over the wiring 18 times, I do have the USB cable wired up correctly. I have a designated com port open and working but, again, can't get past the error message. I'm not very techy and this is really getting frustrating - a little customer support, please! You can reach me at michael.macqueen@dhs.gov - thanks.

Hello Michael,
The current V4 controllers are now silver due to supply issues with the red case. If your looks like the one on our front page: http://www.autosportlabs.net/ then you have a V4 unit. Let's assume you have a V4 unit for now.
The error you are seeing is likely due to a COM port configuration problem. You will need to find out which COM port your usb-serial adapter is on, and make sure the config software is set to use the same port. The steps are outlined here:
http://www.autosportlabs.net/MJLJ_V4_Op ... n_Software
If you are convinced the settings are correct, and you know the MJLJ is functioning (i.e. power LED is 'on', and you verified with a timing light the unit is controlling ignition advance) then you may have an incompatible usb-serial adapter. In this case you should test on a different computer that has a built-in serial port. If you have a desktop PC, you can pull the unit out of the car and test it on the bench with a 9V battery- just to verify you can talk to the unit.
Finally, we also have some troubleshooting information that emphasizes troubleshooting PC->MJLJ communications, here:
http://www.autosportlabs.net/Troublesho ... lt_Lite_Jr.
Some of the steps are rather technical; it might be helpful to have a techie-friend look over your shoulder while you run through the steps.
Please let us know what you find out during troubleshooting!
Also, in the future, it works best when posting a new forum topic on a new issue rather than replying to a different thread. That way we can react to it more promptly. Just a friendly tip!
Best regards,
