MSD 6AL

Post by choppedminx »

Hi

New to all this, waiting for my kit to arrive for assembly.

My question is, can I use my MSD 6AL in conjunction with Megajolt? If so How do I wire it?

I would really like to use it, as I run LPG for long journies, and it runs much better with it

Hope someone can help?

Hello,

The actual question is, will the MSD 6AL work with the crank fired Ford EDIS module?

The MSD 6AL, according to it's documentation, appears to only work with distributor based ignition systems. So it would seem that the answer is 'no'.

However: since you are switching to a crank fired setup with wasted spark, the extra spark energy and ignition timing precision should boost performance in it's own way. I think you will be pleased with the results.

Accel make higher powered Ford EDIS compatible coil packs, so if you want a little bit more spark energy you might want to look into those.

I think Mallory or MSD might make their own version of the above.

Hi Brent

Forgive me if I sound a bit thick, but how is there extra spark energy?
I dont doubt your comments, just need to know :?

I will be running the Megajolt on a '71 Plymouth Barracuda, with tuned 383ci V8 (best ET 12.02/115mph)
- I used to race almost 20 years ago, and have now found that the rubbish petrol we get now, causes problems with the high compression, and I think the distributer is not advancing properly. So I am hoping that Megajolt will help, or hopefully cure the problem.
I am also assuming that I can use a load based output to control a water injection system?

Kit arrived today :D

If I remember correctly, a stock coil knocks out in the region of 10,000V, and modern ignition systems' coils make more like 30k ;)

Generally speaking, in a wasted spark setup you have work distributed across multiple coils instead of one coil with a distributor based setup. Since the coils take turns firing the plugs, there is more dwell time allowed for the coils to saturate compared to single coil setup. The effect is more beneficial at higher RPMs.
