Megajolt working, car still not starting

Post by redkcspit »

I have gone through the megajolt system and have tested it by first using the MP3 signal and it sparked just fine. I next tested it by running my engine with my stock ignition and hooking up a dummy spark plug (I was the dummy a couple times, the shock is not too bad) and checking the number 1 spark from the EDIS unit with a timing light. The spark from the EDIS is right on @ 10 degrees advance in limp home mode on cyliders 1 and 4 (I have a 4 cylinder), and I did verify that 2 and 3 were also producing a spark (no idea the timing as it was off the scale).

When I disconnect my stock ignition and switch over the wires to the EDIS system, I can't start the car. It turns over and if I keep turning it over, my carb backfires. Any ideas?

My next attempt will be to back off the limp home mode timing advance and see if I can get it started with ~2 degrees static timing. Its is very strange since my stock ignition is timed at ~ 8 degrees static timing, can't understand why it is not firing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had similar symptoms when I was first trying to start the engine on EDIS.

I found that the 2 coil trigger cables (EDIS pins 10 & 12 to coil pack connector pins 1 & 3) were the wrong way round.

To try it the other way, I swapped the HT leads at the coil pack, i.e. pairs 1 and 4 swapped with pairs 2 and 3.

It then fired first go. I then swapped them back and changed over the two coil cables instead (same result).

Might work....

May have figured it out. Seems I connected the 12V source to accessory fuse box that I previously installed. Unfortunately, the fuse box was on the acessory output of the starter solenoid. In other words, the unit was getting 12V when the ignition was on (that is why it consistently was testing OK), but not getting 12V when the starter was cranked.

Finaly figured it out when I turned my timing light on when trying to start. When I went from start to run, the starter stopped, but the engine was still turning briefly enough to signal the MJLT to fire, which I think was likly causing the backfire through the carb (probably close to flooded at that point).

I made a new harness, tapping into the correct 12V source and hopefully tonight it fires up. Did not see the forest from the trees on that one.
