New guy. A few Q

Post by carter01 »

Hi,

I'm based in the UK. I know there's a lot of Info on/around this website. Just need to put my mind at ease.

I'm running a Ford KA, with a 1.8 16v Zetec. I planning on putting Motorbike carbs on it.

Since i have the plugs/coil/flywheel sensor, i understand i will not need to purchase those?
I know i haven't got the EDIS 4 module, so i will need that.
I'm planning on ditching the whole loom off my engine, can i do that? People on here have said they've wired the MJ into their orignal loom?

If i purchase a kit, is it easy to make a mess of it? I can say i'm not confident with Electronics.

Also, any one know typical delivery costs to the UK, (also, will i need to pay import fees)
Does the kit include everything i need for the build?

There was something else...I just can't remember. D'oh!

If any one can help me out with answers. That would be great.

Cheers
Carter :D

Correct on both counts

Probably easier to wire it all up from scratch

Have a look at the construction guide - http://www.autosportlabs.net/MJLJ_V3_kit_assembly_guide

If HM Customs decide that they want to charge you for VAT on the declared value, then there's that plus the UK courier's collection fee - some people have to pay between £20 and £25
You could look to see if there's any on eBay being supplied out of the UK right now :) kits might be available if you ask as well...

Near enough - you might have to supply your own solder - I'm not sure ;-)
There was something else...I just can't remember. D'oh!
Probably, "is it worth it?". Answer - Yes :D

Hello Carter,

Yes, the kit includes everything you need to build the MJLJ. You just need to supply the tools and solder for assembling. If you'd like to tackle the kit but are uncertain about the soldering steps, you might be able to find a friend to help you out- or just ask here. Hopefully the assembly instructions are clear enough!

You may consider retaining the part of the wiring harness that includes the power relay box which includes the ignition triggered engine power relay, since you will still need this for the high current demands of the coil pack. When I did the same on a fuel injected car I determined which circuits were useful and retained just that portion. It's tempting to rip everything out, but you can save a bit of re-work by identifying what you will still need and preserving that.

As an example- aside from retaining the engine power relay circuit, you might want to retain the circuit for your radiator cooling fans and thermostat, if it makes sense to do so. In my case I was only too happy to rip everything out and ended up tossing some useful components! :)

As for customs, the amount assessed is based on the value of the package. It's been hit or miss with no pattern we could identify, based on feedback we've received- some have to pay and others don't.

Any other questions just let us know!

Hi, thank you both for the reply. It has set my mind at ease, apart from What BrentP said-

Just so i understand, does this mean...

You may consider retaining the part of the wiring harness that includes the power relay box which includes the ignition triggered engine power relay, since you will still need this for the high current demands of the coil pack.

I still need my orginal ECU to run the car?
Or is it just the wire from the relay inside the fuse box that coverts the power for the coil pack? (nothing to do with my ECU?)
I have to keep the loom for my lights anyway, so i will still have the fusebox.

Thanks again for any advice you can give.

Hi Carter,

You certainly don't need your original ECU at all if you're switching to carbs + Megajolt/EDIS.

Your second interpretation is correct- If it makes sense for your installation, you can retain the original relay box, which is indeed separate from your engine's ECU.

The 'engine' relay which originally fed the high current demands of the OEM ECU (fuel injection / ignition) can be reused to supply power to the EDIS, coil pack and MJLJ. This is the relay that is activated when the ignition is 'ON' and has a fuse rating of about 15-20A.

In reality, MJLJ+EDIS is your 'new' ecu. :)

Hope this helps.
