Timing data in tech manuals

Post by esv »

My book (Haynes) says the following:

Ignition timing
Static or idle w/ vacuum hose disconnected: 5 deg BTDC

Ignition advance
33 +/- 2 deg at 4360 RPM

I guess 33 deg advance means on crankshaft (but I can't be sure of that, can I?)

But main problem is; does it mean 33 deg total advance as measured on the flywheel at 4360 RPM (no vacuum), or the advance in addition to static timing, so that a measurement would read 33 + 5 = 38 deg BTDC?

Grateful for any comments.

i dont know the answer to your main question, but i can say that advance is ALWAYS quoted as crankshaft degrees. which is hardly surprising in view of the fact that the timing marks are on the crank pulley or flywheel.
