EDIS and Coil pack

Post by rex.taylor »

I have installed an EDIS 6 unit and coil pack Plus Megajolt unit on my TR6. All appears to be working, but I am intrigued to know why when I connect my strobe light to ignition lead No1 it appears to strobe at half the speed as the other terminal of the same coil i.e. No 6.
This also applies to 2 and 5 and 3 and 4.
Can anyone explain this.

I to have just fitted an edis 6 to my TR6 only last week.

I haven't had chance to sort the map out yet and the vacuum isn't fitted yet so I'm looking for the original distributer characteristics to use as a start. Currently I've got it increasing to about 27' at 4000RPM.

I've read other posts about strobe lights and have had difficulty myself. My lamp is an old fashioned neon and because the number 1 flashed at TDC once per rev instead of every other revolution (as does plug 6 and the rest) my strobe light blurs as it would at 2000rpm. A more modern neon lamp works a treat though but without fancy inductive pickup or adjustment.

I found the numbering on my coil pack didn't suit the TR6 engine and had to work out the numbering out myself.

Let me know how you get on and where/how you take your vacuum because I haven't looked into that yet.

Cheers

Dave

I have a TR6 PI. The distributor on my early 150HP is purely centrifugal advance with no vacuum advance or retard. Some of the carb versions have both vacuum advance and retard while others I believe have just vacuum advance.

I took some basic advance settings from the distributor before removing it, and have just set up the MJLT with a basic advance curve. The car starts and runs well although I have only driven a couple of miles so far.

Idle 11 degrees BTDC.

Centrifugal 900 0 -- 4 degrees I have set 13 total
1600 5 -- 9 18
2600 12 -- 16 25
4000 12 -- 16 25

Thats what my friend has the PI system with no vac advance. I'm not sure if it has a centrigual advance either as we set the advance to 12 degrees and it didn't seem to budge from there, i may be wrong though, using a magnetronic ignition setup which keeps it pretty solid and accurate.

Would like to hear how much better bottom end torque and drivability you get once setup.

Do you have any pics of how you setup the trigger wheel and vr sensor available please, trying to convince him to do the same thing.
