Does Cellular Antenna need grounded install in metal surface

Quick question. having installed my radio, and the importance of a solid grounded surface to mount the antenna through; does the same apply for the MK3 cellular telemetry antenna? I have a nice spot picked out in the front windshield cowl that means one less hole to drill in the roof, and one less potential spot to leak water. Will the plastic surface lead to a poor signal reception?
