Safe to remove SD card while the device is on?

This may be a dumb question, but is it safe to remove the SD car while the device is still on but not recording?
I want to download and check data between sessions but not turn the device off so the GPS signal stays strong.

Good question. Yes, it's safe to do so. We perform a file system initialization every time we start logging.
