Twin Turbo Rover V8?

Post by chodjinn »

Hi,

I currently have a Rover 3.9V8 with a low boost twin turbo set up. I've been looking into ignition controllers and found this website. I'm a complete novice so please bare with my ignorance!

I'm currently running twin 2" carbs in a suck thru config. Ignition is taken care of (poorly) by the standard dist, Pertronix ignition and a Microdynamics EMS6 boost retard module. I'm planning on fitting an Offenhauser manifold and Weber 500, with a rising rate fuel reg in the very near future (got most of the parts for that).

What I'm after is something similar to the Microdynamics EMS5 Ignition Control module, which is a "complete turbo ignition management with an rpm threshold switched timing re-advance which will reduce the boost retard above a preset rpm". - I need something like this as I'm running on the limit of my pistons and obviously don't want any detonation etc!

Can the MegaJolt be used to provide a similar timing control, in addition to controlling the ignition via coil packs?

Many thanks

Olly

Hi Olly-

Based on your description the MJLJ would be ideal for your application. The MJLJ allows full discrete control of ignition advance through a 10 x 10 ignition map. The on-board MAP sensor will measure pressure up to 255 KPa (about 21 lbs of boost). It works in conjunction with the Ford EDIS module, which provides the drive for a wasted spark setup and the management of crank position.

See the Technical Info and Project Information links above for more details.

Hi Brent,

wow, thanks for such a quick reply! That's really great news mate. I'm going to start getting all the bits together then! Due to my complete lack of knowledge r.e. electrics it looks like the best option will be to buy a complete MegeJolt unit, then get the rest of the bits over here.

Only thing I'm not too sure on is where to mount the MAP sensor? Could i drill a hole in the plenum and bung it in there (meh, not the most technical idea!)

thanks

Olly, MAP sensor is mounted

Olly,

MAP sensor is mounted inside the premaid Megajolt unit that you will order. You will need to give it vacuum, which I'm sure you know how to do that. Megajolt is available with both a MAP sensor or TPS capability (yes TPS you will have to mount). You should get TPS if you can't get a clean vacuum reading. Consult with turbo charged people on this site to find out what will be best for you.

By the wording of your posts, I presume you're in the UK? If so, you'll need to look on the US ebay or find someone on here who can source/send you an EDIS8 unit - <u><b><a href=http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/EDIS-8-m ... tem>Here's one</a></b></u>. Making up a loom to interconnect everytihng is a piece of cake if you're half competent with a soldering iron, and really easy to learn if you're not. I made a "dummy" loom first with string to work out my run lengths in my Mini and wrapped the loom to suit.
<u><b><a href=http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showt ... /a></b></u> may be of much interest to you - these guy's main reason is for waterproofing, but a Rover V8 is a Rover V8.
