Timing data in tech manuals

My book (Haynes) says the following: Ignition timing Static or idle w/ vacuum hose disconnected: 5 deg BTDC Ignition advance 33 +/- 2 deg at 4360 RPM I guess 33 deg advance means on crankshaft (but I can't be sure of that, can I?) But main problem is; does it mean 33 deg total advance as measured on...

That might be a problem, but depends on the "opening time" of the EDIS. The actial spark discharge takes very little time, so there would be no need for the EDIS to ground the coil voltage for longer than necessary. (This is the equivalent of dwell angle for a distributor, I guess.) But I ...

I understand and agree. However, in order to know what the advance would normally be at idle, I have to first investigate how the ported vacuum (or whatever) behaves - hence what it used to tell the distributor. What I _should_ have done, of course, was to measure total ignition advance at idle by u...

Extrapolation below lowest rpm cell

A theoretical question: I understand that below 450 RPM the "cranking cell" (upper left) is used. But what happens at RPMs above 450, but below the lowest RPM bin value? Example: Left bin at 800 RPM. Engine speed drops to 600 RPM. Does the advance stay put om the 800 RPM value, or is there...

Thanks a lot for your useful input.

If I take "linear vacuum" from the manifoil, I would still want zero vacuum advance at idle, right?
How do you guys normally solve that when constructing the ignition map? Do you just set the vacuum advance to be zero in the low rpm bins?

:)

Just a thought, from the top of my head: The Ford EDIS black box fires two coils alternately, via two cables. What would happen if both the two output wires from the black box were connected to a single coil? Would this coil fire on every signal (so could be routed to correct cylinder via rotor), wo...

Vacuum at idle - and vacuum in general

Hello everybody, I recently got my Fiat Panda running with the Megajolt. Great! For the time being I use the default "safe" map, it is working reasonably well already 8) I have seen various discussions about vacuum takeoff positions - on some cars, the vacuum is zero at idle, since the thr...
