first contact with laptop

Post by sierra2dr »

Ok gang,
as I've had progress one step at a time, gaining spark was my last achievement on my 1,8 pinto'd Sierra. And now, downloading the correct firmware was another hurdle (as picture below),but now sorted.
So,got the laptop out and having downloaded the 2nd and 3rd maps from >here<. I've only opened the 2D map and the reading on the ignition advance was 12,and the revs weren't settled, going from 600 to 1000. I don't have an air filter on the DGAV carb,so that might have an influence on unsteady idle rpm.
Can the timing be adjusted via laptop-->MJLJ?
Do I need to download the maps to MJLJ,if so,what do I click on?
thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,

I take it you downloaded the 3.2.1 configuration software which got you past the error message?

Before you proceed further, have a look at our software operation guide, starting here with the quick reference, then proceed into how to upload maps, edit ignition on the fly, etc.

I did a search which led me to this topic http://www.autosportlabs.org/viewtopic. ... da51c722a7
And that put me right

Brilliant! Thanks Brent Image I clicked on the 'Help' on the screen, nothing happened. So the 'At a glance',and downwards is helpful, and it's the Imageicon that sends it to the controller, superb.Image

Paul, make sure you flash(to the right of "write" icon) the memory after you write it, data is lost on power off unless flashed!

Oh...thanks Danny,I was wondering what that was about.
Still,I'm toying around with it,with the few spare minutes I have. Just need to get a suitable map.

I am up to map version 15, I keep making little tweaks to it, driving, testing, etc. No dyno for me yet, I just copied the centrifugal distributor map and went from there. My full load curve mirrors the 009 dizzy, except at high rpm I have added some retard. All the load(TPS) curves I guessed at and am very happy with it now. I just have to finish up my aux input and warmup compensation.

How did you do that? I should have done that first.

Can you define "warmup compensation" ? Is this a modification to the map, based on engine temperature? If so, in what direction would you go? Less advance on a cold engine, perhaps?

More advance, only when cold, only at TPS low or throttle closed. It only takes 3-5 minutes before the head temps come up, but the idle is too low until warmed. Chokes on dual Webers don't work very well, you end up intaking a lot of dirt.

Sierra, I wrote down readings at various rpms with a timing light before I pulled the distributor.

I so really wish I did that myself.

Here is vid of my latest run.

I've been trying to get it settle on 800+/-25 rpm,it's the best I can get so far
