Duratec MJ maps ?

Post by karlak »

Just started the process of an engine change from the 2litre Pinto to a 2 litre Duratec.

Are there any maps about for a Duratec with twin carbs (dellorto 40's) ?

Newbie says Hi to all.

I'll add my request for the above. There seem to be lots of different maps for the Ztec set-ups but few if any for the Duratecs. Some guidance would be appreciated if you don't want to share a whole map.

I have a 2.0 HE non-VCT that is feeding on an unknown bike carb rack (38mm if I'm measuring the right bit).

Understandably no one will have a map to match my set-up, if I can get it firing on a 'generic' map, I would appreciate a helping hand in the right direction. I am ok with cars, and electronics, just never built an ignition map before. As a tuning aid I will have a wideband O2 display installed in the cab but other than that it's 'seat of me pants' (Dyno's are not cheap to use here)

Thanks for any help. :D

The sparks don't care what sort of carbs you are running so don't worry about not finding a map that has the same induction setup as you have. Similarly sparks don't know what brand of engine they are in so as long as the engines are a similar design the map from one engine type may well be a good match for another brand of engine.

By way of example we used the ignition map from a 1.8 litre 20-valve Volkwagon turbo engine on a 2 litre, 16-valve Ford/Cosworth engine as a startup map. Each engine has a modern pentroof combustion chamber, good squish and has large valve curtain area, with well spaced valves so even though the number of valves, engine size and brand differs the timing maps are pretty similar. On the dyno the largest correction we applied to get from the base map to MBT was 2 degrees. To put that in context that is less than half the timing jitter that you might see on a distributor!

Understood. Based on your comments I have had a good look through all the maps posted, and have picked a Ztec map that should suit. I guess from here its just tune out obvious spots and then pour some dough into rolling road time.

Thanks for the reply.

Well, I finally got my Duratec installed in the Escort. MegaJolt and all the bits working well.

For the vacuum camber in this build I used the old Duratec fuel rail with pieces of fuel hose instead of injectors, and it is working surprisingly well, I thought it may be a bit lagging because of the overall volume.

The map it's self is a very safe map, and has not had a true road run in yet but I feel its a good starting point for this engine and configuration. The advance correction is based on a warm-up style correction and the degrees C scaling was got off another members post somewhere on here. I cant find it again so will post it again here, with much thanks and credit to him.

Comments, Queries and improvements most welcome.
