Connecting a Smiths RVI tachometer

After searching for a way to connect up my RVI tacho, I followed a tip given by Josh_b (which came from lotus68racer?), which involved taking the tacho wire which went to the original coil +ve feed (coil current flows through the tacho to the coil) and connecting it to the coil pack common (black wi...

At a guess I would say this was for the RVC type tacho's. Mine's an RVI. The current handling capacity of the BC108 is only 100mA so I would guess that this would burn out if connected to the RVI. I don't know the impedance of the RVI tacho so can't say for certain. I will do some checking over the ...

No I wasn't, and as an engineer, I find that very frustrating. Same with the software. It may have been sensor placement, but with the amplitude of the signals I measured there appears to be some headroom in the placement of the sensor. However I don't know what the design parameters that Ford used ...

I haven't checked the exact relationship between pulley and plots. There is some runnout of less than 0.5mm. It will have to be what it is as I will not be taking the pulley off again unless I have to pull the engine for some reason. Despite all my initial problems and queries, I now have an operati...

I must be getting senile. Can't even read a scope properly. Amplitude is from around 10 volts to 20 volts pk-pk

I have tried again today and the PC software seems to be behaving itself, so now I just need to finish the installation by bolting the box in and tidying the wiring.

vr sensor signal plots

I have just taken some 'scope pictures of my VR sensor signals. I need to know if these are good enough to operate the EDIS module. Scope scale is on the pics but signal amplitude varies between just under 5 volts pk-pk to 10 volts pk-pk. This shows the slightly concentric nature of the pulley. This...

Where can I find details of the signal I should expect out of the VR sensor?

I revved to between 3000 and 3500.

I'll try to check the VR signals when I get my 'scope back.

Megajolt configuration program question

I have connected up the Megajolt controller in the vain hope that it may improve the timing 'scatter' with just the EDIS module. It hasn't, but the engine did run and the display echoed the engine revs. However the ignition map did not follow the revs. The map never got above the second column. The ...

Also forgot to add, my pulley (same as above photo) has an outer and an inner part which are bonded together with rubber. This is supposed to help damp out vibrations and is called a harmonic balancer. Welding onto the outer part may damage this rubber bond.

Thanks Brent. This is similar to my pulley. I have squared up the teeth and they are 3 to 4 mm high. I have ground out the relevant tooth.

Doing anything different like putting a precut trigger wheel on the pulley is not an option as I have to pull the engine to get it off.

I've just finished reprofiling the teeth on my pulley wheel. Now 3 to 4mm deep with a much squarer profile. There has been little improvement on the consistancy of the timing. Wandering about by 10 degrees or so. I have positioned the sensor so it's almost touching the pulley. I was expecting a soli...

using a timing light with megajolt

I have a timing light with settable advance. I've a feeling that these will be confused by the wasted spark system used with Megajolt. I assume the timing light measures time between each spark and therefore can determine fractions of a rotation. If there are now two sparks per cycle instead of one ...
